I feel so fortuante to live in the Golden State. California offers so much diversity. On any given weekend we can travel for’ three to four days and come home refreshed and start anew. Recently with friends we flew to Sacramento for a weekend. We checked in at the Red Lion Hotel,140l Arderi Way.A perfect spot as you are next to the Arden Fair shopping/cinemas center and next to all the conecting freeways.
There are numerous choices for dining in the Capital city so we chose Gonul’s J Street Cafe, 3839 J Street . Gonul Bloom, the charming hostess/ owner, is a native of Turkey. Her love for healthy cooking is evident in the menu.
The California fresh cuisine, with a strong mediterranean influence, is outstanding and brillnatly excuted by Chef Charles Harry. Desserts are outstanding as they have an in house bakery and a very fine wine list with reasonable prices.
Frank Fat’s, 806 L Street, is a Sacramento Landmark. Downtown in the heart of all the government buildings the elegant Chinese restaurant was the ideal spot for our lunch. You will be dining with lawmakers, visiting digniitaries, business men and tourists.
There is an a la carte menu as well as a choice of family-style dinners. They too have a good wine list plus full bar. Reservations are a “must” (916) 442-7092
There are many Northern Italian restaurants in this state but one of the very best in my book is Biba, 2801 Capitol Avenue. The charming Chef owner Biba reigns over a lovely dining room that is so inviting you never want to leave. I have never had one dish I didn't like from her menu. The staff is very professional, courteous and friendly. Regardless how much you eat you never feel stuffed as her food is so light and delicious. Ths sauces are like whisper in the pasta or on any of the entrees. The Lasagna is the best I ever had in this country or in Italy. Open every day but Sunday. The wine list is extensiveand there is a full bar. Reservations are necessary 916 455-2422.
Mace’s Restaurant, 501 Pavaillions Lane, has been a favorite of mine for a long time. A beautiful dining space fillel with lots of glass, mirrors, greenery, flowers and hunting trophys. The wine ce1lars are glass enclosed in the center of the dining area. A great wine selection at a price to sell. Great fresh seafood, lamb, beef and pasta. An open kitchen where you can watch the large staff assemble your order.
There is a full bar and patio.Open everyday for lunch and dinner. Plenty of free parking in one of the finest upscale shopping malls. Reservations (916) 022-0222.
Scotts Seafood Grill and Bar, 545 Munroe Street, has been voted Sacramento’s favorite seafood restaurant. An off shoot of a San Francisco original, but now owned individually, it was very good. I enjoyed Bbqed Oysters, Shrimp Cocktail and Clam Chowder at lunch. Reservations (916) 489-2447 are suggested. Full bar, good wine list and open daily.
Sacramento offers many historical attractions and as you read the above dining great. We flew back ready for new challenges rested and relaxed.
