Most visitors to Las Vegas dine only on the Strip. After visiting Las Vegas over the years I now explore other areas. On a recent trip I stayed downtown at the Queens Casino & Hotel, 203 Fremont Street. I prefer small hotels.
There are two restaurants in the hotel; Magnolia's for breakfast, lunch and dinner 24 hours daily and the award winning Hugo’s Cellar for fine dining every evening from 6:00 p.m. This room features continental cuisine at its finest and has been a local favorite for the past 20 years. Reservations are a “must".
Noted for the Salad Cart, a tuxedo dressed waiter tosses the salad with your favorite dressings as well as a choice of 12 ingredients you can have, all or as many as you wish.
Then comes an intermezzo, your choice of entree, selected seasoned fresh vegetables, choice of wild rice, parsley red potatoes or chef’s choice, baked lavosh ‘n’ cheese, melba rye and a crusty French loaf, a finishing touch of light and dark chocolate—dipped fruits served with whipped cream and pure, fresh, bottled mountain water. With a good wine dinner is about $75 per person. The last time I dined on the fourth of July it was $65. per person. As you leave the ladies are presented with a long stemmed red rose. This is truly a bargain.
The Magnolia serves a good breakfast with homemade biscuits, country gravy and ham with the bone in, omelettes, steaks, pancakes and Danish pastries. For lunch and dinner they have a very fine Louisiana Gumbo, Fried Chicken, Prime Rib, Crab Cakes and a Chicago style deep Pizza that is superb. There is also a Hawaiian and Japanese Menu. There is a fair wine list and full bar service in both dining rooms.
Over the years I have seen the signs at the Fremont Hotel & Casino for the 99 cent Shrimp cocktail and now they advertise 99 cent margaritas. So I walked over in the late afternoon and gave them a try and I can tell you they are a bargain and very good. Don’t be a snob. If you are in downtown Las Vegas drop in and have a taste treat
The Bootlegger Bistro 7700 Las Vegas Boulevard South has been one of my favorite Italian restaurants for the past 20 years. Owned by the same family it has always been consistent.
If you love home style cooking from family recipes you will enjoy the different pasta creations plus traditional Antipasto, minestrone al Parmesan, lasagna, fettuccine Alfredo or pesto, seafood, chicken and beef dishes. A full bar and wine list priced to sell.
The only Swiss cafe is located at 3175 5. Tropicana Road Open for lunch and dinner. This charming restaurant has been around since the fifties. I love the quietness and serenity of this charming dining room. Reasonably priced with great veal dishes. For reservations: (702) 454-227O.
French Chef Andre Rochat has been in Las Vegas for years. He opened Alize at the Top of the Palms Hotel & Casino two years ago. Located at 4321 W. Flamingo road it has the most spectacular view and the greatest ambiance in Las Vegas. It is five stars in my book. Reservations by calling 702 942-7777. A great way to begin or end your vacation.
