When you arrive in Las Vegas, grab some of the free publications in the air terminal or the car rental offices such as: "Today in Las Vegas" or "Showbiz Weekly." In those numerous copies there are coupons for shows, gifts, souvenirs, drinks and food. It is amazing how much you can save.
I prefer to book a hotel off the strip, so this trip I chose Sam’s Town on the Boulder Highway. I have always loved the old west and the ambiance is like Vegas fifty years ago. The rooms are large, the walls hold western art, the rugs are copies of Indian rugs and the furnishings are ranch-style.
I am not a buffet fan, but the Harvest Buffet is considered the best in Vegas. The Billy Bob Steak House is outstanding. There is a delightful atrium with a waterfall in the center of the hotel where you can meditate or escape the sounds of the casino and enjoy a beverage. Eleven movie theatres are in the building and if you need to go to downtown or the Strip, there are buses that have scheduled runs throughout the day and early evening to take you round trip.
I discovered two fine restaurants while in Las Vegas. Bella Luna, 7905 W. Sahara Avenue is a fine Italian grill & wine bar. Dishes suggested: Baked eggplant parmigiana with a light cream sauce& tomato, stuffed artichoke with garlic breadcrumbs in a white wine sauce, chicken & mixed cheese risotto with fresh herbs, porcini mushroom risotto with braised duck & a touch of truffle.
The second restaurant was the best barbecue I have had this year. Memphis Championship Barbecue, 3280 W. Hacienda Way. This nostalgic collection of southern memorabilia really hit me.
It was a fun restaurant. Service was fast and delightful. Suggestions: Baby back ribs, St. Louis ribs and beef ribs were served in ½ racks or full racks with two sides. Sides were: fries, baked beans, rice, cole slaw, cream corn, red beans & rice, macaroni & cheese or a dinner salad.
The sandwiches came with the selection piled high with a choice of meats, fish, sausages or chicken. Entrees included steaks, pastas, shrimp, catfish, pork chops or chicken. Chili & soups are also available. Desserts are pies, puddings, deep dish pies and homemade ice creams. Full bar service with beer and wine and a selection of soda pops you have forgotten about. The prices at both restaurants are moderate.
Las Vegas is still a great place to eat, drink and have a fun time!
