"North Hollywood--The Mikado thinks global with new contemporary additions to the menu"

By Geni Charlesworth.

After 43 years in the San Fernando Valley Mikado Restaurant is adding to its success with a fascinating fusion of classical and contemporary cuisine.

Mikado continues to offer one of the most comfortable Sushi Bars. It was one of San Fernando Valley's first and still is a top attraction with some 59 separate items. Newly aboard since last year Executive Chef Alexander Kybett personally selects the fresh seafoods and other ingredients on the Sushi menu. He has also revised the dining room menu with some unique culinary specialties from many places in the world. He now considers the new Mikado dining menu as global in scope.

This thanks to his vast experience around the world in many notable restaurants and hotels as well as on shipboard in the kitchens of some luxurious cruise liners. However many of the classic Japanese dishes that have given the restaurant fame through four decades are still to be found on the menu.

And the new look at the Mikado Restaurant does not stop there. Manager Brandy Shin has contributed her own unique talents to the dining experience. She selected the new attractive and functional flatware. A graduate of M.I.T. She is an accomplished and original artist and her talents are on display including a new logo for the restaurant. Brandy personally suggested and selected our samplers of the new cuisine. All arrived with a artistic presentation. There was Shrimp tempura and soft shell crab, barbecued tuna and a huge scallop in a creamy masago sauce. Then a dish called Lobster Dynamite with lobster claws en shell with a subtle dip.

Now featured at Mikado is famed Kobe beef, that unique specialty meat of Japan. Ours arrived sliced on a bed of Swiss chard and baby gold potatoes. The sauce was one of Chef Alex's secrets.

We also had to try the pork tonkatsu, panko breaded slices in a tangy tonkatsu sauce. Everything we tried is on the regular menu either as an appetizer or entree. Our dessert was another original from Chef Alex Kybett. Called chocolate-satsuma cake it arrived at the table as molten chocolate-satsuma center and orange-mint salad.

On another visit we promised ourselves that we would try the Korean b.b.q. boneless ribs or the Karaage fried chicken--Thai chili-ginger-lime marinated breast with a spring roll.

The Mikado Restaurant is located adjacent to the Best Western Hotel at 12600 Riverside Drive in North Hollywood. There is free off street parking. Luncheon is served from 11:30 to 2:30 Monday thru Friday and dinner every night of the week from 5:30 p.m., 5 p.m. on Sunday. There is also a full service cocktail bar and lounge.
