"Anaheim-- For decades Mr. Stox has remained a five star restaurant"

by Raymonde Lorgeou Carr

It is a well-known fact that even the most successful restaurants often have a life span of a single decade. But there is always an exception to a rule. Mr. Stox is one of them. The restaurant is located near Disneyland and the Anaheim Convention Center. It opened in 1968 under the ownership of Harry and Maureen Fahnestock.

The Marshall family acquired it in 1977. Today Chick , Debbie and Ron Marshall remain active in the business on a daily basis. The restaurant is large, but divided in several dining rooms, all decorated tastefully and in a different style to suit any occasion and provide privacy.

The Napa room accommodates up to 22 people. The Chateau room overlooks the award wining 20,000 bottle wine cellar and accommodates up to 34 people. The Sonoma room sits up to 80 guests and the semi private Bordeaux room sits up to 60 guests. Mr. Stox also has an outside heated terrace for up to 26 guests. We particularly enjoy the full bar lounge with the cozy fireplace.

Executive Chef Scott Raczek has been very instrumental in the success of Mr. Stox. Trained at the Grand Hotel by Master Chef Dietrich Hoffman and after a successful career at the French Creole Crawdaddy restaurant, The Cellar and Le Chardonnay in the Registry hotel, Brothers Chick and Ron Marshall convinced him to join Mr. Stox to put the restaurant on the culinary map as they had done with their world renown wine cellar.

A new staff was trained, old menus reworked. Scott Raczek did not only bring experience and talent to the restaurant, he brought freshness to the cuisine. He strongly believes that being in California, the abundance of fresh products must be fully utilized. The herbs grown in the back lot of the restaurant perfume all dishes which also are served with many vegetables. Scott Taczek calls his cuisine Contemporary American, which translates for us into the best international cuisine offers.

On the menu you will find a large selection of seafood dishes: Grilled king salmon with butternut squash puree, Brussels sprouts and dried cranberries on parsley sauce, Sesame seeded Ahi seared rare with green bamboo rice, papaya relish and vegetable spring roll, Shrimps and clams on linguini with sundried tomatoes, spinach and garlic white wine broth, a lobster tail nestled on spinach risotto with asparagus, baby carrots and Meyer lemon sauce. The lamb dish is exceptional: sliced rack of corn fed Colorado lamb with mesquite grilled vegetables, pesto risotto and a thyme reduction. The New York steak is served with Roquefort Yukon potatoes, asparagus and caramelized onions. Our dish of choice is the Osso Bucco: a braised veal shank in a sweet Vermouth reduction with rustic vegetables and saffron peal couscous. When visiting Mr. Stox you must taste the Lobster Latte: a warm and silky Lobster bisque made the old fashion way. It is seafood nectar. Mr. Stox has a vegetarian menu with tasty artichokes ravioli, a Portabello mushroom dish with a basil sauce and flavorful Linguini pasta with fresh vegetables tossed in olive oil, tomatoes and garlic.

We took the tour of the kitchen and saw the wood burning fire where fish and meat are deliciously grilled, the three levels oven where five kinds of homemade breads are baked twice daily: Sunflower seed honey wheat, wild rice thyme, red beet fennel, Kalamata olive rosemary and sourdough.

Mr. Stox has a full time Pastry Chef on board. It is very difficult to choose between the cream brulee, the berry tarts, the lemon meringue cake, the velvet cheesecake and the decadent chocolate and cherries five-layer cake.

The restaurant offers a pre fixe menu for lunch and dinner with two entrées to choose from. Mr.Stox is a wonderful place to celebrate any occasion. A pianist performs nightly in the dining area. The wait staff is highly professional, prompt and discreet. Recently a friend treated us for dinner at Mr. Stox for our birthday. Everything was done to make us feel special: balloon at the table, personalized baked Alaska made with Haagen Daz chocolate dessert and a souvenir picture.
